ARIZONA is my grandmother born on March 16,1907
to Benjamin James Davis and Alice Briggs of Tyriley, Louisiana.
ZONA was of Irish, Spanish, Blackfoot and Choctaw Indian descent.
She was the first born of her thirteen siblings and the last one to leave this Earth. She ministered wisdom, love, peace and joy to all who visited her home. She helped to raise all of her brothers and sisters since her mom died at the age of 43. Arizona was gifted to see and live through many revelations and dreams given to her from God.
During the early 1900's, women could not own businesses and they were not allowed to have a home put
in their name. She paid $500.00 for her home that was built by her Uncles Robert and Rueben Torry on what was called "Kinsfolks Hill" in Pineville, Louisiana. She married Joseph Freeman James who came to court her
while riding on his bicycle. They never owned a car, however on her first attempt to drive, she hit a tree, so never attempted to drive again. Her home and family were her true pride and joy. She walked over ten miles for many days year round, working as a proud housekeeper to help other families. She bore two daughters. The eldest daughter is my mother who made many sacrifices for me and my five children after our house burned. Thank God for Mothers!!!
My grandmother, whom we called "Ma" lived and loved Jesus and was a mother of many. She made homemade pear and fig preserves. Zona made us home cooked meals daily. Sundays were a special family gathering time because we shared the cakes made with butter pineapple preserve filling and white homemade icing after church; my favorite. My God! That cake was "heaven sent"! I was always the first one to finish my food, so I got to cut and eat the cake first! During my grandmother's last year with us, I was honored to be her apprentice and learn her cooking secrets. I had a chance to share my business plans for ZONA'S PLACE. Now, it is my turn to serve others! ZONA died one month shy of 100 years of life! This is the story of how ZONA'S PLACE began and IT'S ALL GOOD. GLORY to GOD!
